Social Security Disability Benefits

Are you eligible for social security disability? People belonging to disability and social security space are more likely to experience economic hardships. Although some can work, most of them tend to face a significant challenge trying to get a job compared to people without disabilities. Individuals who have no or limited capacity to work due to severe or permanent disabilities are more vulnerable to these hardships. And this is when social security disability benefits are handy.

The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are by far the largest of various programs that offer critical lifelines to individuals living with disabilities. Either program can only benefit an individual who has a disability and meets the medical criteria. SSDI and SSI are administered by Social Security Administration (SSA).

Although SSDI and SSI use the same standards to establish disability, they differ in other aspects, including eligibility and determining monthly benefits.

Who can get social security disability benefits?

The process of determining who can benefit from either program ultimately depends on an individual’s work history. To be eligible for SSDI benefits, you must have worked and accumulated enough work credits for a defined period of time. This means SSDI benefits are only available to individuals who have contributed to Social Security System. Of course, the work credits will depend on your age and when you became disabled.

Unlike SSDI, which considers work history, SSI pays benefits based on financial needs. All the same, eligible individuals must be disabled, blind, or age 65 or over.

To get disability benefits from either program, the most important part is proving that you’re disabled. You must provide concrete evidence that you cannot engage in an activity that is substantially gainful due to a mental or physical condition. The condition should be medically determinable.
